Volnay, Cote de Beaune, Burgundy, France
750ml / 13% ABV
Grape Variety: 100% Pinot Noir
(50% new oak): Bright, medium red. A bit darker and more subdued on the nose than the Chevrets, offering pure scents of violet, bitter chocolate and licorice. Densely packed but light on its feet, showing excellent mineral grip and a strong vertebral column to its dark berry flavors. Tannins are almost strict today but ripe, and nicely buffered by strong, chewy dark berry fruit. Built for a long life in bottle but it will require patience. (ST) (1/2016)
The 2014 Volnay 1er Cru les Caillerets has a lifted bouquet, quite perfumed with hints of raspberry and cassis, nicely defined with just a hint of vanilla coming through with aeration. The palate is medium-bodied with good backbone; this is a solid and tertiary Volnay that is much more like a Pommard towards the finish that is showing just a little austerity. Serious at the moment... (NM) (11/2015)
Pair with feathered game, offal, and sautéed mushrooms and carrots. Also pairs well with Coq a vin and other slow cooked light meat dishes.
