Wellington, South Africa
750ml / 14% ABV
Blend: 100% Pinotage
With almost no other wine region in the world producing this unique varietal, South Africa has forged the way in the polarizing world of Pinotage. A genetic cross of Pinot Noir and Cinsault, it was created in South Africa in 1925 by Abraham Izak Perold, the first Professor of Viticulture at Stellenbosch University. Perold sought to combine the best qualities of both varietals, highlighting the heartier qualities of Cinsault and the elegant, ethereal ones of Pinot Noir. Production and quality of Pinotage bottlings have grown exponentially since it was first introduced. The grape produces a wide range of styles from light and fruity to tannic and rich, making it fun to explore, but perhaps a little intimidating. For this wine, grapes were sourced from six distinctive vineyards in Wellington, creating a blend with complexity and verve.
"On the nose distinct coffee, rich dark chocolate, and baked plums. The ripe subtle tannins create a wine to be drunk very young. This unique style of Pinotage is a perfect accompaniment to salmon, roast venison and even chocolate mousse."
On the nose rich dark chocolate and powerful freshly brewed coffee styling, with a hint of mint and baked plums. The palate shows distinct characters of coffee and chocolate, which is balanced with smooth velvety tannins and a lingering aftertaste.
Although this wine is a great partner to rich lamb casseroles and gentle Malay curries, the best companion for this wine is a rich, decadent chocolate dessert like Molten chocolate lava cake or Chocolate Pecan brownie, absolute heaven!
