Deep purple-black in color, the 2015 Cabernet Sauvignon springs from the glass with lifted crème de cassis, violets, and chocolate box notes plus hints of lilacs, raspberry leaves, anise, and cardamom. The perfumed black fruit preserves and chocolate-laced notes completely pack the full-bodied palate, with soft, velvety tannins and just enough freshness, finishing very long and very spicy. Definitely one for hedonists seeking immediate gratification. (LPB) 94+   (10/2017)

Well, I must say the Wagner family has come a long way since I first met Charlie and Chuck in the mid-1970s and sipped on their incredible 1973 Cabernet Sauvignon. In my book, that $5.00—its suggested retail price when I first sold it—remains one of California's finest Cabs ever, and probably forever. Now we are into the 2015 vintage and the wine is still top-notch in its category. While it is way different from the Wagner family's first efforts, it is a beautiful wine that offers a full-bodied and lush presence. It is currently one of the most popular wines for wine lovers across the USA. The wine scored well in a recent blind tasting that I conducted. The winery, always on the cutting edge, recognized that the wine had to made in this fuller, rounder style to be successful. Enjoy this wine for what it is and not what it once was. Pair the juicy black fruit flavors, generous oaky notes, and palate smoothness with hoisin-accented, boned-in Cantonese-style chicken thighs, and don't be afraid to include lots of garlic, ginger, and a touch of fine fish sauce. This wine has a signature style that is dark in color, with rich fruit and ripe, velvety tannins – as approachable in youth as in maturity. Caymus farms Cabernet grapes in eight of Napa’s 16 sub-appellations, with diversification enabling the winery to make the best possible wine in a given year. This Cabernet offers layered, lush aromas and flavors, including cocoa, cassis and ripe dark berries.
Pairs nicely with a filet mignon or your favorite steak
