The 2010 Brunello di Montalcino Vigna Schiena d'Asino is a gorgeous wine and one that I highly recommend if you are a Brunello fanatic like me. The purity of the fruit is stunning and the wine underlines the qualities that make Sangiovese among the noblest of all Italian grapes. It offers crystalline intensity with forthcoming aromas of bright cherry, balsam herb, anise seed, pressed violets and spice. This ensemble is balanced and nuanced. It shows amazing depth and complexity. Fruit for the wine is sourced from a single vineyard that runs across the crest of a hill. The name Schiena d'Asino ("the donkey's back") evokes this unique geography. Mastrojanni last made a Riserva in 1998 and the wine (released six years after the harvest) has carried the name of its vineyard designation ever since.

A tightly wound, firmly structured red, this boasts cherry, strawberry, mineral and tobacco aromas, and flavors. Stays fresh and focused, but shuts down a little on the lingering aftertaste. Demonstrates fine potential. Best from 2018 through 2032.
James Suckling 94 Points
A fresher style of Brunello with firm and chewy tannins yet it's structured and intense with plenty of fruit and dried citrus and fruit character. A racy and solid red. Drink or hold.
Wine Enthusiast 93 PointsAromas of blue flower, pressed powder and perfumed berry mingle in the glass. The rich palate offers layers of ripe wild cherry, vanilla cinnamon-spice, savory herb and licorice alongside assertive, fine-grained tannins. Drink 2018–2025.
After 42 months in 16 hl barrels made of Allier oak this amazing wine rests for a further 12 months in bottle before release. In appearance, it is deep red and thick yet clear. A deep, dense wine. On the nose ripe red fruit, balsamic and Mediterranean scrub shine through following onto a full and savory palate. A wine to stand the test of time. Drink now or cellar.Food Pairing
Pairs well with all red meats, heavy stews and lamb shanks, but also simply in good company.
