Chile and Argentina, the biggest wine-producing countries in South America, have been blessed and struggled over their wine history. The best triumph due to its natural position with the ocean and mountains protecting it, Chile is now one of the very few regions to have never been affected by phylloxera, therefore have some of the oldest vines in the world.

Cabernet is the most widely planted grape in Chile, other leading grape varieties in Chile after Cabernet Sauvignon include Sauvignon Blanc (and Sauvignon Vert), Merlot, Chardonnay, Carmenère, and Syrah. Muscat of Alexandria retains a large share of plantings, but the grape is used chiefly for distillation. Red grapes account for over 70% of the total acreage in Chile. Reserva and Gran Reserva wines spend a mandatory amount of time in oak, adding additional complexity to the final wine.

Argentina was not so lucky and was affected by the vine destroying aphid. However, the country overcame phylloxera and is now the most important wine-producing country in South America, the world’s fifth-largest producer, and in 2008 the world’s seventh-largest exporter of wine. The country’s vineyards are mostly confined to the western sector of the country, in the plains and foothills near the Andes, where they experience a dry climate, with warm days and cool nights. In descending order of importance, the country’s most important red grapes include the Malbec, Bonarda (Charbono in the USA), Cabernet Sauvignon, Syrah, Merlot, and Tempranillo. Torrontes is the main white varietal associated with Argentina creating aromatic wines, dominant in ripe stone fruit, slightly reminiscent of Gewürztraminer or Viognier.

Today you will be taking home 5 big reds (and 1 white) from Chile and Argentina, showcasing different regions, winemaking styles, and flavour profiles.... their terroir. 


1. Carmin de Peumo, Peumo, Chile 2013

This is Chile’s first iconic Carmenere, made up of 91% Carmenere, 5% Cabernet Sauvignon and 4% Cabernet Franc it is elegant and powerful with loads of dark berry, rich cherry and currant flavours with hints of olives and allspice. The leafy finish is long and rich, showings hints to the dark chocolate accents.

Food Pairing: Perfect with rich, smoked meats and strong cheeses.

2. Perse, Jubileus, Mendoza, Argentina, 2014

Still a baby this is a really special Malbec with hints of Cabernet Franc that will age into greatness. On the nose, just a note of vegetative earth that decants out slowly, emphasizing ripe dark berry fruit. It has a medium body and a fresh complex acidity with mature tannins. On the palate cherries, plums, blueberries, licorice, and floral notes. Age for 6 to 10 more years, or drink now, but decant.

Food Pairing: Serve with a simple prime rib.

3. Ritual, Supertuga block, Casablanca Valley, Chile 2017

Ritual practices biodynamics and low impact farming, always a good sign when the winery cares for the environment around. Yellow-green in colour this is an expressive chardonnay with aromas of quince, apple and hazelnut. The palate is soft and creamy. This is a full-bodied wine with beautiful fruit and a long finish.

Food Pairing: Delicious and focused, drink now with Portuguese roast quicken, rosemary potatoes, and sautéed greens.

4. Chakana Red Blend, Uco Valley, Argentina 2013

This blend of Malbec, Cabernet Sauvignon and Syrah is a heavy wine, decant to lift out the raspberry cherry, blackberry, and violets. A slight herbaceous and iodine note brings a savory quality. Peppery on the finish, mouthwatering and persistent.

5. Alpassion Private Selection, Mendoza Argentina 2014

This 100% barrel fermented, garnet coloured wine is a blend of Malbec, Cabernet Sauvignon, Syrah, and Cabernet Franc. With a stoney minerality on the nose and palate, this wine opens into notes of chocolate, black olives, graphite and orange bell pepper. On the palate, the ripe red and black fruits shine through sitting along-side the chocolate with the addition of vanilla.

6. Old school by Alpasion, Mendoza Argentina 2013

New Alpasion packaging for its iconic wine, a careful selection of the best vines of Syrah, Petit Verdot and Malbec. Big and bold though elegant, the Syrah is dominant with ripe blackberries, blackcurrant, cherries, pepper and vanilla. There are hints of dried herbs, with soft tannins and a long finish. The top wine of the Alpasion Winery.

Food Pairing: Enjoy with big red meats dishes such as; braised lamb shanks or pepper-crusted beef, even Lomo Saltado.
